Wet vs. dry AMD

Dry (Atrophic) AMD

Gradual thinning of the macula. We slow it with AREDS2 nutrition, lifestyle changes, smoking-cessation support, and Amsler-grid self-monitoring between visits. New complement-inhibitor (pegcetacoplan) therapy may also be appropriate in selected cases.

Wet AMD

Abnormal new vessels under the retina leak fluid or blood, rapidly damaging central vision. Treated with regular Anti-VEGF intravitreal injections (Avastin, Lucentis, or Eylea). Most patients need ongoing injections on a personalised schedule.

  • What is macular degeneration (AMD)?

    AMD is age-related wear of the central retina (macula). The dry form causes gradual central vision loss; the wet form adds bleeding and swelling and can damage vision quickly without treatment.

  • Is dry AMD treatable?

    There is no cure yet — but progression can be slowed with AREDS-2 vitamins, lifestyle changes (no smoking, healthy diet), and regular monitoring with OCT so wet changes are caught early.

  • How is wet AMD treated?

    With regular Anti-VEGF injections — Avastin, Lucentis, or Eylea — into the vitreous. Modern treat-and-extend protocols reduce the number of visits while keeping vision stable.

  • Will I go blind from AMD?

    AMD does not cause total blindness — peripheral vision is preserved. With modern treatment, most patients keep enough central vision to read, recognise faces, and live independently for many years.

  • How often do wet AMD patients need injections?

    Initially every 4 weeks; the interval is then extended (6, 8, 10, 12 weeks) only when OCT shows the retina is stable. Most patients settle on a 10–12 week rhythm within a year.
